I hope you all are doing well and staying healthy in these unprecedented times.

It is certainly challenging for a social club to carry on social activities when we have been through this Covid-19  crisis and our red ,yellow and now green (or almost green ...or maybe back to "yellow") phase.

In any event, we will continue to offer as many opportunities as are allowed by Pennsylvania guidelines. Our travel trips are are in very capable hands of long time members and I hope that we will have terrific sign ups/ turnouts for both the Italy Trip (Joyce Schiavo and Pat Mullins) and our Winter Park trip (Ted Eliker and Linda Peduto).

I look forward to meeting  all the BVSA members and since I am relatively new to BVSA,  please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance. Remember President John Schroeder ,who is circling back to be the club Vice President, will be here to guide me every step of the way .John is leaving some very large ski boots to fill (or kayaks) but I hope to serve the club and the membership in the same great way BVSA is accustomed to.

Although we do not have any meetings scheduled at this time, please check in frequently at our Facebook Page .

Our Facebook page is : BRANDYWINE VALLEY SKI ASSOCIATION

You will find that there is a bike ride tomorrow starting at Raymour and Flanigan (Exton ,Pa.) parking lot 1:30 and a Happy Hour after the bike ride at World of Beers (also Exton ,Pa)

And while we are on the topic of Facebook did you know we have 288 members on the BVSA Facebook Page yet only 200 paying members.HMMMM!

It may be that as little as half of our members are even on Facebook page.

Wouldn't it be great to make a couple clicks at any hour of the day , 24/7 and find an unannounced ,unadvertised and unbelievable event that fits perfectly into your schedule?

If your answer to that question is YES then you may like to attend our BVSA Zoom Meeting : FaceBook Training 101 "The Basics"

Be on the lookout for more details about this and please consider joining us (You do not have to have any other Facebook friends just BVSA if you like. Honest).

Finally  ,Hello for now and see you soon

Ahhh, summer. And the end of the Board year.

Your Board met virtually again in May. We continue to plan for the future, confident that skiing will return. You will learn more about those plans over the summer.

High on the agenda for May was club elections. The slate of candidates was uncontested. Rather than carry out a virtual election with a foregone conclusion the Board voted to accept the slate. Your new Board is made up of:

    • President            Bill Pennewell
    • Vice President    John Schroeder
    • Treasurer            Nancy Canale
    • Recording           Barb Cropper
    • Corresponding    Vacant
      Activities Committee (4 positions open)

    o   Brenda Alek

    o   Ted Elicker

    o   Jeff Lucas

    o   Wally Sliwinski

They join our returning 2nd year Committee Members

    o   Paul Hart

    o   Pat Mullins

    o   Linda Peduto

    o   Joyce Schiavo

Know that it is not our intention to make this a regular thing. We all want in-person elections with a varied slate of candidates that offer your choices to return next year.

It is very satisfying to have some new blood joining the Board this year. (‘New’ meaning new-ish to the club and never before on the Board or Activities Committee.) They are Bill, Brenda and Ted. Please do welcome them and offer your support and encouragement.

We have a critical vacancy for the vital role of Corresponding Sect’y. This position is responsible for assembling our newsletter with contributions of articles and photos from the membership. It is the glue that hold the club together, keeping you apprised of activities and sharing our accomplishments.

The Activities Committee elected Jeff Lucas to represent them on the Board as Activities Chairperson.

This is my last PresSez. Technically it should be Bill’s first but everything is a little behind and I didn’t want to miss the chance to say THANK YOU for all the support and encouragement I have received over the past four years. I really did enjoy my tenure and it is because of you, our membership, that made it so. I am not going very far as I am returning as Vice President again. I will be here to help Bill with the Transition and will remain an active member of the Board and the club.

So now I turn over the reins to Bill. You are in great hands. Stay home. Stay safe. Wear your mask. We will meet again soon.

What do you get when you cross the Atlantic Ocean with the Titanic? Halfway.

It probably comes as no surprise that our all-important May meeting will be cancelled. As are all upcoming activities. You know the drill.

The Board and Activities Committee met virtually again on April 15. Things are looking very enthusiastically at returning to be an active, vibrant club once life starts returning to normal. We are already seeing appropriately distanced bike rides and, soon, kayak outings.

May is the time to select your club leadership. Obviously, in-person elections. But elections will occur!

But first… nominations. Here is the current slate of candidates

     ·       President            Bill Pennewell

    ·       Vice President   John Schroeder

    ·       Treasurer           Nancy Canale

    ·       Recording           Barb Cropper

    ·       Corresponding  Vacant

    ·       Activities (4 positions open)

    o   Brenda Alek

    o   Ted Elicker

    o   Jeff Lucas

    o   Wally Sliwinski

We have a critical vacancy for the vital role of Corresponding Sect’y. This position is responsible for assembling our newsletter with contributions of articles and photos from the membership. It is the glue that hold the club together, keeping you apprised of activities and sharing our accomplishments. Access to a Computer is required. Prior experience with a Word Processing program or Microsoft Publisher is a plus. If you know a good candidate, or if you are interested yourself, please contact me directly.

Elections are intended to offer you, our members, a choice! With one candidate per position, you do not have many choices. Never-the-less, we WILL hold an election, albeit virtually. Expect an invitation to participate in a virtual election(poll) on or about May 6.

If you want to find out who loves you more, stick your spouse and dog in the trunk of your car for an hour. When you open the trunk, who is happy to see you?

Stay home. Stay safe. Wear your mask. We will meet again soon.

Prez Sez …. April Fools day is April 1. Trust no one and believe nothing. Pretend it’s Facebook.

WOW, what a difference a month has made!

Like I am sure it is for you, life in my house is very different. But Kathy and I are well and sheltering in place. I hope and pray for a quick reversal in trajectory so we can start looking forward to those fun activities again. But for now, I have ample toilet paper and I am content to stay safe and secure at home.

You have probably seen that all near term club activities are cancelled. This includes the April General Meeting. We typically hold our second round of nominations followed by elections at this meeting. I am taking the unprecedented step of postponing them until the May meeting and hope we can have it. May is traditionally the turn-over day from the prior Board to the new Board so we will not loose any time in doing so. No, I cannot say for certain that we will have a May meeting. But I can hope.

And speaking of nominations, an update on the candidate situation. For the Board we have a candidate for President and Treasurer. We have a candidate for Recording (take notes at Board meetings) but we really could use another. That still leaves vacancies at Vice President (aka Membership Chair) and Corresponding (aka Newsletter). All these are voting members of the Board.

We have ample candidates for the four Activities positions.

The Shelter-In-Place rules did not stop your Board and Activities Committee. We still managed a virtual meeting on March 18 via videoconference. Along with the normal business matters your Activities Committee began laying the groundwork for the 2020-21 Ski Season and our normal Summer activities!

So, STAY HOME!  Stay Safe! And I hope to see you (in person) soon.

The next time you have company, serve them a bowl of shelled peanuts. After they've eaten a few handfuls, casually mention that you've never liked peanuts, but you love to suck the chocolate off of them.

See you May 6 (I hope).

How long will your resolutions last? Go ahead… I have a stopwatch.

The Holiday Fog is lifting. It’s time to get back to work.

Fortunately, this is a quiet time of year in a way. All the planning for the trips is done. The big parties are over for now. It’s time to do what a ski club does best…. SKI!

So please do get out there and have fun. Be safe. And send pictures.

I look forward to the new year as a new start to old bad habits.

    Holiday Party Thank You

A great big Thank You to Tim Noonan and Kathy Schroeder for a great Holiday party. They get better every year. The turn-out from the BVSA surpassed recent past years by a long margin. And the participation by KOP made it even better. This one will be hard to top… but top it we shall try.

Please stop looking at me when people say, ‘out with the old’.

    Club Business

Alas there really is some very important work ahead. BVSA elections are a few short months away. It is time to start thinking about our future direction, and who is going to take us there.

All Board positions are up for election. Four of the eight Activities Committee positions are rotating out and there is one vacancy to be fill. I cannot predict who will, and will not, volunteer to run for another term. I do anticipate turn-over as some of our leadership has been at it for quite some time. They may want a break. They deserve a break. They have worked very hard for you for years.

That work has paid off. We have a vibrant, active club. We are financially sound. We have a great future ahead of us. We need smart, creative, and responsible leadership to maintain the momentum.

If you are curious about leadership in the BVSA please do speak with me or any member of the Board or Activities Committee.  We will train.

May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions?

    Pool Party

As promised, the Pool Party was a resounding success so I will extend the thanks of those that contributed… but especially to Carole and John Pucella for volunteering their beautiful pool and yard for the event.

    A little bit of business

Whoever said technology will replace paper has obviously never tried to wipe their butt with an iPad.

A short time ago I overheard the remark ”Wish we had an email service like our free yahoo.”

So what became of the BVSA Yahoo Group?

Shortly after I became President so long ago I did a study of the BVSA’s Yahoo Group to gauge its usefulness. The exact details of the results are lost but here is roughly what I learned.

    ·       Most of the email addresses registered in the Yahoo Group were unknown. Only about 25% of all the registered emails were associated with a Member, past or present.

    ·       Most of the unknown Yahoo Group members did not have a recognized name; most had no name at all.

    ·       Only about 25% of known members, past and present, were registered in the Yahoo Group.

    ·       Greater than 60% of members past and present are members of our Facebook page.

    Conclusion:

    - we were communicating with strangers.

    - we were not communicating with Members.

Continued use of Yahoo was not productive; and potentially detrimental to our members. I shifted emphasis for member-to-members communications to Facebook. Facebook has much higher participation (and growing). It is more secure (we know who is registered ; members admitted by a moderator).  For all its faults it is a modern, vibrant service. This contrasts with Yahoo Groups which has not had a facelift in, well, longer than I can remember.

Agreed, for a club with our demographics Facebook can be daunting for some. But Facebook is navigated daily by hundreds of millions of people. It is easy enough that a 10-year-old can do it. And it has far more penetration with the future members of the BVSA than Yahoo will ever have.

So check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/180751838041/ . I hope to see you a concert, a Happy Hour, or the Pool Party. And if not… see you at Brickside in September.

I wonder what Facebook employees do to waste their time at work?

At last Wednesday’s(4/3) General Meeting the Membership approved the slate for the Board and Activities Committee for 2019-20. Before I announce the results I want to take a moment to thank those outgoing members who volunteered their time to make your club great. Each of them gave of their time and talent to provide YOU an awesome Club. Please do Thank them when you see them next. They deserve all our thanks and gratitude.

    Maureen (Mo) Collins (Activities)

    Emily Warner (Activities)

The membership also approved some NEW Members. Joining us on Activities are

    Paul Hart (Activities 1)

    Pat Mullins (Activities 1)

    Joyce Schiavo (Activities 1)

You all know Pat and Joyce and their wealth of experience with the Club and our Activities. Paul is relatively new to the Club but is rich in experiences of his own. I am excited about the prospects they offer us.

Lastly, and equally important, are the returning members. They are:

    John Schroeder (President)

    Phil Shiner (Vice President)

    Nancy Canale (Treasurer)

    Barb Cropper (Recording)

    Lisa Shiner (Corresponding)

    Linda Peduto (Activities 1)

    Jeff Lucas (Activities 2)

    Tim Noonan (Activities 2)

    Kathy Schroeder (Activities 2)

    Sheila Williamson (Activities 2)

I trust they will have your support and encouragement.  Please do thank them.

Of course, I cannot close without the obligatory Public Service Announcement. There is a lot of work in front of this talented team. These good people can do a LOT. But they can do nothing without YOU.

    Your support

    Your participation

    Your ideas and suggestions

    See you on May 2nd.

May all your troubles last as long as your New Year resolutions.

    Merry Christmas

I write this on the eve of Christmas Eve knowing it will reach you after Christmas. Never-the-less… on behalf of the entire Board and Activities Committee, we wish all our members and their families a very Happy Holiday Season, a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year the whole year long.

Dear God, my prayer for 2019 is a FAT bank account and a THIN body. Please don't mix it up like you did this year.

    Holiday Party…

We had a very successful Holiday party on December 8th at St Anthony’s Lodge in Downingtown. This was the second consecutive year the BVSA held this event at this venue. St. Anthony’s did a great job for us this year. We improved certain aspects from the prior year. And the band Just For Play did not disappoint.

On New Year's Eve, Marilyn wanted every husband to be standing next to the one person who made his life worth living. As the clock struck, the bartender was almost crushed to death.

    Bon Voyage

We are entering the BVSA busy season. Whether your destination is Big Sky, or Switzerland, Elk Mountain for Cross Country, or Killington have a GREAT trip.

I was going to quit drinking for my New Year’s resolution. Then I remembered nobody likes a quitter.

    Yes, you heard that right

    • The January General Meeting will be on Wednesday, January  9th, one week later than normal.

I will raise my left leg before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve so that I can start the year off on the right food.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I shot my first turkey for Thanksgiving this year.

Scared the crap out of everyone in the frozen food aisle at Wegmans.

    Bon Fire Party Thank You

Another great big THANK YOU to Emily and Dave Warner for another hugely successful Bon Fire Party. And Thank You to all the members for bringing those delicious dishes to share.

    Post-Thanksgiving Thanks…

    …to elastic waist bands.

    BVSA is on a roll…

No, not a crescent roll… this is not another Thanksgiving joke.

    • ·       Two very successful parties.
    • ·       Three fully subscribed trips (there is still room for more though).
    • ·       The Holiday Party has already surpassed last year in participation.
    • ·       New and returning activities (Fall Foliage Express and Horseback riding.
    • ·       Membership is up.
    • ·       More ski trips are being contemplated for this year.
    • ·       Happy Hours are always well attended.

Yes, the BVSA is in great shape thanks to the participation of our members. And there is room for more.

    Thanksgiving is an emotional Holiday…

People travel thousands of miles to be with people they see only once a year, and then discover once a year is way too often. (Johnny Carson)

    Yes, you heard that right

    1. The December General Meeting will be on MONDAY December 3rd.
    2. The January General Meeting will be on Wednesday, January  9th, one week later than normal.

The most important cooking instruction on Thanksgiving…

Is to remember to give wine to the cook.

Sign up for the Holiday Party on line or at the December General Meeting

A Mexican magician tells the audience…

I will disappear on the count of 3. Uno… Dos…  Poof, he disappeared without a Tres.

    Presidents Party Thank You

A great big THANK YOU to all those members who attended our second Presidents Party. It was such a thrill for Kathy and I to host so many good people at our home on October 13. There is so much history and good will among our members. So many good times and even tough times. This party brought together many old dear friends. You could feel the energy.

And we extended that heritage by welcoming several of our newest members this year.

I want to take a moment to thank a few folks who went above expectations.

    • Mo Collins who again was a huge help in the kitchen.
    • Linda Peduto / Ted Elicker for helping to set up and serve.
    • Jeff Lucas for bringing beer, wine, and chairs.
    • Deb Curran (new member) more kitchen duty.
    • Dan (the Man) Dacey for keeping the fire burning in the fireplace.
    • Tom Ward for keeping the fire burning in the fire pit.
    • Phil Shiner for manning the check-in table.
    • And, of course, Dan Marinacci for taking the photos.

And I am sure there were more that I did not see. Thank you to you all. Regardless, your presence alone was an important contribution to the success of the party.

But there is one member above all that deserves a special THANK YOU. The person that planned the menu, ordered the food, shopped, prepared more food, decorated and cleaned the house, and even brushed the dogs; Kathy Schroeder. It should have been called the Kathy Schroeder Party.

    Mountains aren’t just funny

    …they’re hill-areas.

See you at the next General Meeting, Bon-fire or Holiday Party

    John Schroeder

    President, BVSA
